Our DonorsMineralsEd programs and resources are made possible through the charitable contributions of businesses, groups, associations and individuals committed to a vibrant mineral resources industry. Donations from major mining companies and mine suppliers have provided the backbone of support for annual operations. Individual contributors, many with membership in our "1000 CLUB" have, on their own, provided up to 25% of the program's annual operating budget. Government grants, primarily from the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines (BCMEM), make up only 6% of total funds raised to date.
In addition to raising funds for annual operations, MineralsEd has carried out a successful fundraising campaign to build the MREPBC Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund, first established in 2004 and envisioned to become a permanent source of income for MineralsEd's annual operations, was seeded with a $100,000 donation from Hunter Dickinson Inc. The MREPBC Endowment Fund has grown to over $4.2 million, thanks in large part to a 5-year (2007-2011) matching funds pledge from Teck Resources Ltd. to contribute up to $200,000 annually, and to generous personal donations for Robert Dickinson and Ronald Thiessen in 2010.
Some $8.7 million has been raised since our teacher-industry partnership program began in 1991, including $4.2 million for the MREPBC Endowment. This support has enabled MineralsEd to directly assist more than 8,500 educators who, over this same period of time, are estimated to have taught minerals, mining or Earth science units in their K-12 classrooms to more than 770,000 students.
